Potato Battery Science

In science elective, we we're testing if a potato could power electricity from copper and nails, in this process we used 7 potato's so we could power more energy than just 2 potato's, some copper wire and some nails to make some alligator clips, also make sure you have a voltage meter so you can see how much electricity the potato, nails and copper can produce altogether.

We also did 2 tests around trying to power up a light, first test was a fail, second test was a success, we we're able to power the light.

Brain Box Science

 What did we learn about?

In today's science elective, we we're making a Windmill, this was around copper, technology and electricity, we had 4 tests, Test 1 was a fail also test 2 and test 3 but Test 4 was a total success although the spinner kept on flying off the windmill.

There were multiple rotations we could've chosen but instead my group and I chose the brain box because it looked very interesting, although Lucas N didn't think it was interesting on this update today.

Olympic Medal Values

What did we learn about?

We learned about what it takes to be an olympian and all the values you should have to be one! The values all olympians should have is Excellence, Respect and last but not least friendship! My friends and I made this poster about the 1st, 2nd and 3rd medals, along with the values at the bottom.

What did I find really simple?

I found it easy to create the outline and the shape of the medal because all you needed to do is just go to shapes and select the shape called the oval, to me it looks like a circle but yeah, also inserting the text 3rd place with the tool called Word Art.

What did I find challenging?

The thing that was really bugging me and challenging be was the poly lining of the ferns covering the edges of the medals because when I tried poly lining it, I needed to stop clicking to each corner too fast otherwise it'll come out as a line and it would be so frustrating to redo it.

What can I do next time to improve?

Maybe next time I do this I could improve on my poly lining skills because almost every time I try poly lining it just turns into a line so I need to practice on my poly lining more to get it right every time.

Question Time!

What do you think I should do to my 3rd place medal next time, should I add more details to it or should I just leave it how it is?

The Coin Drop Science Elective

In science, we we're learning about Newton's First Law Inertia, Inertia is sort of like laziness of an object. When there is a reaction, there is a opposite and equal reaction. What you need: Glass cup, 4 or 5 coins, a hard and soft paper depends if you want to test which card is better.

I would say that when Eraia, Inatiaus and I did this, we did pretty well, we always got it in just with a simple flick with your finger, I forgot how much I got them in but at the end I tried all of them and it was successful! All the times I tried and got them in was roughly 5 or 6 times.

The Egg Drop Science Elective

In Science, we we're learning about Newton's First Law inertia, we used 1 toilet paper roll, a plastic plate, a plastic cup of water, and an egg. We set up the cup of water first then placed the plate on top following on with the toilet paper roll and the egg. Then you have it all setup you just have to simply nudge the plastic plate, don't do it too hard or else the egg and the water will go everywhere, when the egg was moving, it did not want to stop, the container of water interrupted the egg's fall.

I found it easy to use the smaller cup because when we tried the bigger cup it was harder to get the egg inside the cup of water than the smaller cup. (In my opinion)

I found it hard to try not to crack open the egg and let it spill everywhere because Toby and I cracked a couple egg's because I think we were both applying too much power into the nudge.

Next time I will try not to crack the eggs because all the egg white went all over my hand and it was disgusting and slimey.

Rock/M&M's Stacking Science

In Science, we we're learning about how nothing but gravity holds rocks or other stuff when you're stacking them, my highest rock stack was 5 and my highest M&M's stacking was 2.

I found it easy to stack the rocks because how I was been able to stack it to 5 is because they we're not as curvy as m&m's.

I found it hard to stack the m&m's because no matter how hard I would try to stack them but I didn't give up, the current world record was set by a Maori All Black and it was 5, when I heard that I was shocked, Vinzent and Tyran stacked 3 m&m's.

Next time I will try harder to stack more m&m's or rocks because I felt like I could of stacked even more.

Natural Disasters Survival Kit

We were learning the important stuff we need if a natural disaster occurs, for my poster I did a torch, canned beans, apple, drink bottle, medical kit and a radio, I really enjoyed making this and I think mine is fantastic.

I found it easy to create the medical kit because all you hat to do is make sure its the right size, make sure it has the right words on it and also make sure it has the right colour.

I found it hard to polyline the radio because when I outlined it in the picture, it had so much detail.

Next time I will try add more accessible things.

Cold Air Balloon Observation Part 1 and 2

During science, we we're learning about what an endothermic reaction, we made one by filling up a balloon with baking soda, vinegar, a measuring cup and a bottle. When we added the baking soda and the vinegar it caused a chemical reaction, causing the balloon to inflate.

What happened? When vinegar and baking soda mix, an endothermic reaction occurs. This produces carbon dioxide which inflates the balloon. The endothermic chemical reaction will also lower the temperature in the area surrounding the vinegar and baking soda so significantly that you will be able to easily notice the change in temperature.

I observed/predicted that when the baking soda and the vinegar mix, the balloon will blow up so much that it'll pop, luckily it didn't happen because if it did, most of our chromebooks would be affected by the mix.

We tested it and it didn't go as good as I expected it to be, when Mrs Bava attached the balloon to the milk bottle, it had a slight rip in it, that's what caused it to splat everywhere.

Here is a video to learn about it:

Balloon Madness!

During science, we we're learning about Isaac Newton's third law of motion, he said that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, so we tested it with rocket balloons, what you'll need: Tape, String, paper straw, balloons. My group and I was testing it and our results didn't go so well, we failed I would say.

I found it easy to create the structure because all you needed we're straws, balloons, string and tape, also make sure your string is nice and straight and you have a very firm grip on it.

I found it hard to figure out why my balloon didn't turn out how I was expecting it to turn out, it just kept on twirling around and around, Vinzent thinks that if the balloon has less air in it, the faster it'll go, I should of tried that in the first place.

Next time I will sort out what will go right and what will go wrong in this experiment because I think I was more on the 'it will go wrong' side.

Persuasive Writing

We were learning about writing a persuasive writing on if we agree or not to be prepared for an unpredictable natural disaster, I think I went on pretty well after I checked it when it was printed, I was pretty impressed of my writing that I did this term.

I found it easy to paste the persuasive writing from the document into the slide because all you had to do is copy and paste every paragraph into the slide and just change the backgrounds and page setup.

I found it hard to gather all the evidence I could because I had to look on a lot of different sites, I didn't even know that Civil Defence had all the information, I maybe didn't check properly.

Next time I will try make a better descriptive piece of writing in term 4, I hope it's a different topic so I can either find it easier or harder.

Milk And Food Colouring Science

During science, we were learning to make a multi coloured milk food colouring separation, we put some soap onto a cotton bud and put milk into a bowl, we added a couple drops of food colouring and saw the reaction when we put the cotton bud that had glue on it mix with the milk and food colouring, it was separating and curling up.

I found it easy to add some drops of different colours of food colouring because it was simple, we we're all sharing them around and it only took like 3 minutes to fit all of the colours into the bowl of milk.

I found it hard to make the cotton bud with glue on it stay on the surface of the milk because Mrs Bava said to keep on the surface otherwise it'll ruin it, I sometimes accidentally dipped it too deep into the milk.

Next time I will be more careful of my bowl because I sometimes spilled a bit on the deck which causes the deck to stink.

Here are some photos during the process:

Lava Lamps

During science, we we're making lava lamps, we put oil into an empty cup and then put water inside the cup and somehow it wasn't mixing, because the oil was lighter than the water, it doesn't mix because of intermolecular polarity, we added some drops of broken Aspro Clear tablets, they sank to the bottom and was sort of fizzing.

I found it easy to add my drops of Aspro Clear tablets, because all you had to do is just break them into halves, or even quarters, and just insert them into the cup of oil and water.

I found it hard to know the right amount of oil and water because when I poured it in, it looked like I poured a bit more oil than the water.

Next time I will try add more Aspro clear tablets into the cup such as breaking them into more pieces to make the fizz and bubbles even more better.

Bath Bombs

In science, we were learning about making bath bombs during our science elective, I succeeded to make one and it turned out great! We had to make sure we didn't have more than enough of the products we used otherwise it wouldn't work properly, including the food colouring. The recipe is 1 cup of baking soda (dry) - 1/2 cup of citric acid - 1/2 of epsom salt - 1 tsp of water (wet) - 1 tsp of essential oil - 3 tsp of olive oil / Coconut oil / Almond oil - 2-3 drops of any colour of food colouring.

I found it easy to mashup the mix of the products together because it can easily dry and then roll it up into a ball, then place it into the cupcake mould, we also got to take it home.

I found it hard to handle the amount of time this took of mixing it because whenever I would try mix it, it would just lose its colour, so I had to add 2 drops of food colouring in order for it to not lose its colour and stay yellow.

Next time I will add a different colour to my bath bomb because I didn't expect it to come out with barely any colour.

How did it react? When a bath bomb comes in contact with water, the baking soda and citric acid react to make carbon dioxide bubbles. This is an acid–base reaction, where baking soda (also called sodium bicarbonate) is a weak base and citric acid is a weak acid.

Camp Kaitawa Reflection

We we're learning about making a google slide about what our goals and challenges and changes we would think be better at camp.

I found it easy to think about what I was going to animate about because I had already had it in mind.

I found it hard to figure out what highlights I would add into the google slide because I had a lot of highlights at camp, so I chose the best and successful highlights I did at camped.

Next time I will add a body to my person the kayak because adding a smiley face is just not enough to make a very good quality animation.

Sunflower Poem

We we're learning about reposting an edited and recrafted writing we had done in the past, this writing is my sunflower poem

I found it easy to copy the Embed code and insert it into this post.

I found it hard to find and select my writing that has already been edited and recrafted, I chose this one because I reckon its the best writing I have done in the past.

Next time I will think of adding a longer poem.

My Horouta Animation

We we're learning about making an animation about our favourite bit of the horouta story, I chose the bit when Paoa was cutting down the tree becuse it looked interesting to animate about.

I found it easy to colour in the trees and curve line the Awa and the apples, I tried doing as descpritive as I can, also the axe that Paoa was holding is pretty easy to poly line too.

I found it hard to polyline Paoa because in the story he had a lot of detail to him, especially his clothes and face. Next time I will add water ripples as Paoa is floating on the tree down the river like I said, I wanted it to be as descriptive as possible.

Triathlon Recount

We we're learning about writing a recount about the 'tri'athlon over at Churchill Park, with Team Toroa and some of Team Karearea.

I found it easy to replace the boring words such as the, as, then, went, into very descriptive and rich words, I also found correcting my punctuation pretty easy as well because I already knew where to put them during editing time.

I found it hard to remember what we did on that day because I had kind of forgotten what we did, so I asked my friends and luckily they knew everything of what happened on that day, especially the hand games.

Next time I will try and add even more powerful words that I found because the words that I found, I still think they are pretty boring to add into my writing, well some of them are but not all of them.
